I'm mad AT John Simm for converting me to British footie. I actually watched GB beat UAE .... alone, of course, because none of my friends or family would be caught dead watching "soccer." ::)

Great news about the cycling :). Like buses, none and then two come along at once!

One thing the Olympics has done in the UK is create lots of debate about what it is and what it means to be British, especially after the unique and thought provoking opening ceremony.

I love the idea of an engravings and etchings gold medal. Where on earth did the idea for such a sport come from?

I bet it was a decent match PP. I've got my fingers crossed for team GB football - men's and women's.

Team GB's up to 5 gold medals, but who's counting?[image]

Oh yeah - Team GB's London 2012 roll of honour - gold medals

'I love the idea of an engravings and etchings gold medal. Where on earth did the idea for such a sport come from?'

Evidently the founders of the modern Olympics felt sport related art was important. Tastes change.

The debate/discussion What does it mean to be British? has been going on for quite awhile, but in light of this summer, where the UK is so much in the spotlight, it brings renewed interest. Suppose it'll go on for some time. Maybe hard to define exactly, but most have a feel for what it is.

Some young people's view:
What does it mean to be British – and does it still matter?

Even younger! ;D

The opening ceremony made me wonder what other countries would define as 'Britishness'. I'm sure some aspects of the evening would be baffling to lots of people but hopefully our unique sense of humour and eccentricity came across. What on earth did the non-Brits make of the Queen/Bond segment?

I'm not a sports fan but I've found myself watching all sorts of stuff - archery, canoeing, shooting, cycling and I'm looking forward to the athletics. Not sure the Olympics has been the big money spinner we'd hoped - apparently London has been pretty empty and theatre tickets are being reduced along with hotels. I'm sure the tourist trade will benefit in the long run, just maybe not this year. Shame :(

I do hope so. Heard a snip pit from The Now Show Today where they said something like 'Lots of people will have seen the Queen's back and gone 'Nah, that's not the real Queen.' and then a few seconds later 'Oooo..''

What a great weekend for Team GB. At the top of the table for athletics medals - enjoy the moment whilst it lasts, third overall with 16 gold medals so far. Brilliant gold for Andy Murray with also silver in the mixed doubles. :) :)

Watched Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mohamed Farah win medals in quick succession on live TV - so exciting and what a spectacular evening for British sport.

Reading about it all on Sunday morning was exciting enough - it must have cheered everyone up immensely to see the medal count rise so dramatically Saturday. And the gold in men's singles tennis today too! As JS tweeted, the l'il island of Britain has done fantastically well.

We had the big Union Jack flying again today! (Yes, to answer a question someone asked last time, my OH is British.) And I think it was the teenager in our neighbours' household -- one American and one British parent -- who drew the Union Jack in coloured chalk on their asphalt driveway.

ETA: Well the rover vehicle Curiosity has landed safely - but the old question remains: Is there Life on Mars?

We aren't sports fans in our house, but who could fail to be moved by that fantastic opening ceremony and the excitement, pride and joy on all those faces? We've been away on our hols so haven't really seen much tv at all, but we see the news from time to time, pick up the occasional newspaper and I can get twitter on my phone sporadically so I've kept up with the medal count! After the security fiasco before it had even started it is good to see that everything is going so well. The only shame is that so many tourist-reliant businesses in the city are suffering because anyone not going in for the Olympics heeded the advice to stay away! Hopefully that situation will change after the closing ceremony.

Popping in to put down a few words of extreme gratitude for coming out of a recent car accident relatively unscathed. Other motorist hit us (son was with me) from the back whilst on the motorway. My son's fine and I'm being treated for neck pain with meds and physio.

Not drinking at the moment, but wanted to splurge for everyone else!! ;D ;D

Sorry to hear about your car accident imaof4 - just glad you're both OK. Whiplash can be nasty so I hope it doesn't last too long - sending healing hugs :D

I have to echo everyone else's sentiments and wish you a speedy recovery from the hopefully-minor effects of your car accident, imaof4. Are you sure you woke up in 2012?

imaof4, I too hope you and your son are recovering smoothly. My 91-year-old dad was just in a car accident. Luckily his only damage was a cracked sternum. Must be the time of year. :(

Take care!
